John Linwood Battelle is a journalist as well as founder and chairman of Federated Media Publishing. He has been a visiting professor of journalism at UC Berkeley and also maintains Searchblog, a weblog covering search, technology, and media.

Battelle is one of the original founders of Wired magazine, the founder of The Industry Standard magazine and website, and "band manager" of the collaborative weblog Boing Boing. He has also written for Business 2.0 and is program chair for the Web 2.0 conference. He studied at UC Berkeley, earning both a B.A. in Anthropology in 1987, and a M.Jour. (Master's in Journalism) in 1992.

In 2005 Battelle published a book on Google and the Internet search industry, titled The Search: How Google and Its Rivals Rewrote the Rules of Business and Transformed Our Culture.
